Base ‘Gran Capitán’, Besmayah Iraq

Since 2014, Twelve spanish contingents of approximately 500 troops each have conducted instruction and training activities since Spain joined operation ‘Inherent Resolve’ at base ‘Gran Capitán’. The Bismayah base, which is 45 kilometers southeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, was Spain’s most important base in Iraq until 2020. Under the label “Building Partner Capability” (BPC). Spanish troops have trained 17 brigades of the Iraqi Army and 10 brigades of the Iraqi Federal Police – more than 50,000 people in total which is equivalent to 22% of Coalition’s training capability.

Spain’s special operatives and its aviation unit in Iraq known as Task Force Toro continued operations.
